[Vocabulary] What does the term 'funky' primarily mean to the Western world?

I just need to know if the word 'funky' immediately strikes as 'a cool thing' with most of the Western world.

That's the intended meaning for me.

Hello, The Ultimate:

I've just read somethng that reminded me of your thread. (I have emphasized some words.)

"I was in no danger of overpaying [for a room at a certain hotel that was] ... funky and spunky [lively / spirited].... The room, which was stuck in the 1960s, had dated furnishings, faded bedspreads and carpeting, but it was clean and the bathroom had been re-tiled."


[My note: After checking my dictionaries, it is my opinion that the author used "funky" in the sense of being old-fashioned or unusual in an attractive way. In other words: quaint.]
