What do you think is the importance of the English language?

Good English is important so that you don't say things like, "You are a very impotent man!"

NOT A TEACHER

(1) Some people feel that it is important to learn English because:

(a) It is currently the international language.

(b) It is the language used in what some people feel is currently the

most important country in the world.

(c) It is the language of the Internet.

(d) It is the language of arguably the most popular motion pictures

and television shows (including excellent productions from the United

Kingdom).

(e) It is the language that you currently need to advance in the

business world.

(f) It is -- in the opinion of many people -- the most flexible of

languages when it comes to grammar, vocabulary, slang, etc.

(g) It is, in short, a marvelous instrument for communication among

human beings -- in the opinion of many people.

(i) Some people praise it because:

(a) It is "vigorous sounding." (With total respect, some people judge

some other languages as being too "weak" or "sentimental" or "ambiguous.")

(b) "Real" English words are short and to the point.

(c) It can "borrow" words from other languages very easily.

(d) Its word order (subject - verb - object) is -- in the opinion of

many people -- the most "natural" way to speak.

(2) Of course, many people believe that their language is equally

important and maybe even more important than English. Each person

must make up his/her/their own mind. (I understand that some

students in certain countries are not studying English. They are

studying a "certain" language that some people feel is destined for

importance in the business world.)

(3) The importance of English to you personally perhaps

depends on where you live and on what your career plans are.
