Hi,

I would like to ask whether this sentence could have some reasonable meaning:

"while the fans enjoyed her first book, she thought of ideas for the next one"

I thought it could say that, whereas the fans enjoyed the book, she had already ideas for her next book in her mind, but than I realised, there should be a past perfect tense in second part of sentence. Or shouldn't? Could past simple tense emphasise that, she already had these ideas long time? Or is there another meaning so, that the sentence is grammatically correct?

Thank you very much for help

Re: Search for meaning

While can mean the same as whereas, but in this sentence:
While = during the time that.
Thought = was thinking.

During the time that fans were enjoying her first book, she was thinking of ideas for the next one.

Re: Search for meaning

Or

While fans were enjoying her first book, she was already coming up with ideas for the next one.

Re: Search for meaning

"She already had ideas for the next book in her mind" is something I would never say. Do you know why?

Re: Search for meaning

Because there wouldn't be another location for her ideas?

Yes, Tdol, but I was hoping the learner would respond.

Note that I have changed your thread title. Titles should include some/all of the words/phrases being discussed.
