What does "wouldn't be due till after I serve my term" mean?

No. Never assume that any two things are always interchangeable.

No. In fact I edited my reply to match the tense of the original and disabuse you of the idea that they are always interchangeable.

Note the correct way to ask your question. We don't just make a declarative statement and stick a question mark at the end.
