I must disagree.
Use the hyphens with year-to-date.
It's how it's listed here: Year-to-Date financial definition of Year-to-Date. Year-to-Date finance term by the Free Online Dictionary. and here: Year-To-Date Definition, two sources I would trust, as well as in the content on numerous other sites.
They don't look old-fashioned. They look correct.

I think the custom varies from country to country.
In Canada, the hyphens are left out more often than not. If you look at government documents, you will see both "year to date" and "year-to-date", but more often without hyphens.
