When using "year to date" in a sentence, when is it proper to hyphenate?

Always write "year to date" without dashes. They seem old-fashioned.

I think the custom varies from country to country.

In Canada, the hyphens are left out more often than not. If you look at government documents, you will see both "year to date" and "year-to-date", but more often without hyphens.
