I often heard this phrase during cricket commentatory.

Since cricket doesn't make any sense, it only stands to reason that its color commentary wouldn't either. ;-)

Seriously, sports commentary doesn't have to make sense. The ice hockey commentator here is famous for saying things like "Buy Sam a drink and get his dog one, too!" and "Scratch my back with a hacksaw!" when goals are scored.

I would not say that it is a phrase that is common in cricket commentary in general, however Andy Zaltzman is a comedian who often makes up silly phrases as part of his act and also does this in his cricket commentating as well.
