It can't hit you "in" the face because "in" means that it would actually enter the cavity of the face. "on" is more appropriate b/c once it hits, it rolls away.
The ball was heading in the direction of the face so I believe it's 'in'.

I watch NBA and when they dunk on someone else they say "in your face".
What about "He hit me in/on the stomach."
Why are there so many answers for "on"? You hit someone in the face, in the guts, in the balls, etc. You don't hit someone on the face, on the guts, or on the balls???
In British English, we use 'in'.
