About This Word List
The Dolch high frequency list, created by Dr. Edward William Dolch in the 1930s - 40s, is a collection of the most common English words found in children’s books of that era. These words, also known as sight words or basic sight vocabulary, are sorted by their frequency of use. The list contains 220 common “service words” and an additional list of 95 high-frequency nouns. The 220 words in this list should be memorised so that they are rapidly recognised when reading. This makes reading much easier, because the student can then focus on comprehending the remaining words.
