My understanding is that culture shock can occur when someone who has lived in one culture is suddenly put into another culture.

Good question! ;-) 'What is culture shock?' or 'Why does culture shock happen?' strike me as meaningful questions. I'm not sure what 'How does culture shock happen?' even means. It's a bad question.
