"As soon as he had put his hand up to ask a question, I interrupted the lesson by shouting out loud."

"As soon as he put his hand up to ask a question, I interrupted the lesson by shouting out loud."

Are both of these sentences correct? I am trying to identify where I can and cannot use the past perfect.

They are correct but don't mean the same thing. 1 implies one action (shouting out) happened after another. 2 implies the action happened simultaneously.

1. "As soon as he had put his hand up to ask a question, I interrupted the lesson by shouting [out] loudly."
2. "As soon as he put his hand up to ask a question, I interrupted the lesson by shouting [out] loudly."

Note my corrections above. "out" is optional, but "loud" is not an adverb. You need "loudly". Whenever you give us more than one sentence to look at, please number them to make it easier for us to refer to them in our responses.
I can't say that sentence #1 is incorrect but sentence #2 is more likely and more natural.
