Attire in deep mourning

I came upon a clause in a sentence from Poe stories which I do not quite catch. Please, see the underlined part:
"She was attired in deep mourning, and excited in my bosom a feeling of mingled
respect, interest, and admiration."
Can I interpret it as "She looked very sad"? Any ideas?
