I am looking for the correct verb to use in my sentence. Do you use "become old/older" when you are speaking about things/gifts, etc?

"I always get rid of old things and even gifts when they..."

Try something like:
"... when they become old and are past their best".

I wouldn't use "old things" if you're going to mention them getting old/older later in the sentence.

I get rid of things when they get old, even if they were a gift.

"I always get rid of [STRIKE]old[/STRIKE] things and even gifts when they become old."

My shot.

I hope you don't get rid of antiques, which become more valuable as they get older.
