I think this always implies ['...and cries']. People do sometimes sleep on their front, but they're not usually described as burying their head in the pillow - although that's what they do.

BobK gave you as close to a figurative use as there is. The phrase is quite literal, if you accept that definition of "bury". A figurative use of "bury" would be "to bury one's head in the sand", which means to deliberately ignore a problem. To bury one's face in one's pillow means just that.

Burying your head in a pillow is quite concrete (but not totally, as the back of your head is uncovered); when you've done it, you cry (and that's the figurative sense).
