Hello.

I want to write an exam that consists of two sections, first one questions students must choose from ( Is the correct name "selective questions?") The other section is questions that students must answer ( Is the correct name "compulsory questions?")

1. Optional questions
2. Compulsory questions

By 'selective questions', I think you mean that there are, say, three or four questions and students must choose one from this selection. If so, I think 'selective questions' is the best word, since 'optional questions' sounds like the students can choose not to answer them.

Why not identify them with instructions:

1. Choose one question to answer from this section.
2. Answer all the questions in this section.

That's right. Students should choose two or three questions among the other questions, but optional questions are not required by students to answer.

I will definitely write clear instructions from which students will choose what to answer.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

Are they required to choose one among a group of questions?

In selective questions, students should choose some questions to answer

Students must choose two or three questions from a list of questions. I think the term "selective questions" is the correct.

I disagree. All the questions in that section are optional. I already explained this.

Students must choose two or three questions from a list of questions. I think the term "selective questions" fits best.

"Optional" seems to imply that something does not have to be done, i.e. the questions in that section do not have to be answered.

I might be wrong, but I think elective questions might be a better fit.

In either case, you will have to be certain that your students clearly understand the instructions.

1. Choose one question to answer from this section.
2. Answer all the questions in this section.
That still seems to be the simplest and clearest way to do this. Any number can be substituted for 'one' in #1.

Given the lack of agreement in this thread, it seems clear, and I see no need to use the type of questions in the section title.
