Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

He looked at his watch, but it was smashed. Seven quid were gone down the drain

down the drain = in vain, for nothing, without result, in no purpose,

The sentence should be as follows:Seven quids have gone down the drain…

The truth will come out when the glazers have gone and then we can .... to even make the reserves- that 7-8 million quid down the drain! ...
