what is the word, you, in the following sentence: subject or object?

How are you?

Ikramullah, member type: English teacher :up:
No offence intended, but what do you teach your students? :roll:

I am definitely against this post and consider it offensive. This forum should be a place where everybody feels free to ask her/his questions and express her/his daubts about vocabulary, grammar, ... without risking her/his reputation.

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

If you arrange the sentence in "regular" order, it may be easier

to parse (analyze) the sentence:

You are how?

You = subject.

are = verb.

how = adverb.

(Of course, only the order "How are you?" is idiomatic. That is,

how native speakers use the language.)

I entirely agree with your well-expressed remarks, Khosro.

It is impossible to welcome new member Bamako to the board after this insulting jibe.

I reported his post for rudeness some hours ago but it's still there.

I don't think Bamako3 is a new member. We've seen Bamako2 recently. I do believe corum was banned lately too.

Bamako3:
Home Country: Argentina
Native Language: Bashkir :?::shock:

Nope! :-( I wonder who can teach me. :-?

I was away and offline for a couple of days and have only just got back. It's sorted, but you'll have to keep looking for a Bashkir teacher, Mara.

You could try asking Bamako, Mara.
