I think it's possible for one person's incorrect answer to be acceptable to another person.
It would be unnatural with the preposition.

Yes it's an adverb, but only in the known idiom "going places", which means travel: https://www.lexico.com/definition/placeI didn't know "places" can be used as an adverb.
