Does "gift" sound natural?

"My friend gifted me an iguana."

It is a usage that I have come across from time to time. It certainly doesn't sound natural to a BrE speaker of my generation. I think that most BrE speakers would regard it as an Americanism.

"Gift" as a verb has become very common recently in American English.
