Hi all,

One of the my supervisors e-mailed me "I know you borrowed my Snijders and Bosker multilevel models book, but although I seem to recall that you returned it to me I can't find it now. Do you still have it by any chance?"

However, I've not borrowed any books from him. I'm going to reply him in a very polite manner. I need your suggestions of how can I tell him that I did not borrow his book?

The difficulty is that he was two memories, one certain, "I know that..." and the other not, "I seem to recall ...". I suggest: "Dear Sir: If I had borrowed any book from you I would have returned it. But I have never borrowed any book from you. I think you must have confused me with another student."

I've got his reply, "Sorry about that. Now I am very curious who I am thinking borrowed the book! I must be getting old !"

It was a nightmare sending a very polite email to him. Thanks for your suggestion. Based on his personality and the last part of his email "
I must be getting old !", still I'm not sure if he believed me or not.

It appears that he believed you.
