"In hospital" vs "at the hospital" vs "in the hospital"

Which one is correct?


1- I went to see my friend in the hospital.

2- I went to see my friend in hospital.

3- I went to see my friend at the hospital.

I'd use #1 when visiting a friend who is a patient and #3 for visiting a friend who works there.

We don't use #2 in American English. #1 is for visiting a patient; #3 for anyone else,
