I was writing a story yesterday. I left it halfway through to be written later. In the evening I started rewriting the story "from where I left it off".

Is it correct to say "from where I left it off"?

See above. In case the strikethrough isn't clear, it's "from where I left off". Note that you didn't "start rewriting" at all. That means you went back to the beginning and revised what you'd already written. Here's how I'd write the whole thing:

Yesterday, I started writing a story but stopped about halfway through. In the evening, I picked up where I'd left off. [I'm hoping to finish writing it tomorrow.]
