Hi, is the noun "individuals" used properly in the following sentence? Moreover, does it have a different meaning from the noun "people"?

Celebrities are individuals who lead lives that are disturbingly distant from reality; they are plastic people living in plastic bubbles.

Yes, "individuals" is used correctly. You could substitute "people" without much of a change of meaning. One could say that using "individuals" focuses a little more on their being individuals rather than a group.

 But it can get excessive. If you ever hear Viv Richards commentating on cricket, you'll notice that he uses the word indiividual every other sentence. ;-)

PS And factor in the alternate sentences.
