"We know they have killed 30 British tourists in Tunisia, 224 Russian holidaymakers on a plane, 178 people in suicide bombings in Beirut , Ankara and Suruc, 130 people in Paris – including those young people in the Bataclan, whom Daesh, in trying to justify their bloody slaughter, called them apostates engaged in prostitution and vice. If it had happened here they could have been our children, and we know they are plotting more attacks."

Is the underlined "them" necessary in the above speech? Is it grammatically right?

Just as in : He is a man whom I call him a good helper. The word "him" is not necessary. So why does the speaker use "them" in that sentence?

Thanks!

"Them" shouldn't be there.

You are right: 'them' is incorrect in that sentence.

Please state the source of your quotations at all times.

Rolling news is written at speed, so errors creep in. Don't expect 24-hour news sites to be grammatically perfect every time. They are trying to post things quickly, so they're often not checked that thoroughly. Corrections often come after publication.
