I would like to how, and what would be the best and most appropriate sentence constructions to convey that 'due to bad drainage or insanitary conditions, there is a foul smell in the area/locality'?

Is the below sentence accurate?

"Lack of drainage system raises a persistent foul smell in the area."

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, Point.Blank.

Your opening sentence (beginning ‘due to’) expresses the problem better than the second one.

Thanks Rover for a prompt response. What I am more keen on knowing is that how would you construct the sentence around foul smell is the locality (irrespective of the cause)? What would be more appropriate - raises a persistent foul smell or spreads a persistent foul smell or causes persistent foul smell or there is persistent foul smell ?? Which of these would be used by a native speaker of English to address the persistent foul smell issue in the locality?

Thanks

How about:

The poor drainage system causes/gives rise to a persistent foul smell in the area.

Ted, for the sake of clarity you should write ‘gives rise to/causes’ instead.

Can you see why?

Try:

foul odor

Or:

stink

Or:

stench

While "smell" is more or less neutral, we use "odor" or "stink" or "stench" for unpleasant ones and 'aroma" or "scent" for pleasant ones.

Of course, "smell" isn't always neutral. (See below.)

Ooh! What's that smell!

The way it's written makes it appear that you might be suggesting:

The system causes rise to ...
The system gives rise to ...

By changing the order, it's clear that "gives rise to" (all three words) is an alternative to "causes" (one word).

@Point.Blank - You will have noticed, I'm sure, that three of your posts have been deleted by moderators. That's because all of them just contained a "Thank you" message. You don't need to waste time and space adding a new post for that. Hover over the "Like" button in the bottom right-hand corner of each response and a little "Thanks" icon will pop up. It looks like this: 🙏. Simply click that on any response you find helpful. It saves time for everyone and keeps the thread shorter.

Actually, that is not the only reason I deleted one of Point.Blank's posts. I've also given him one demerit point and a caution not to use Chatlish in the forum.

I see that Point blank has submitted successfully ony three posts so far. Is it possible that the 'Thank' button works only when a member has submitted ten post?
