On Valentine's Day this year, he told me that he really did love me and was truly sorry for not recognising it sooner. Then, six weeks ago, he broke down and said he had something dreadful to tell me.

It transpired that, for the past two years, he had gone back to visiting prostitutes (about eight times in all) - plus he had been using pornography for most of his adult life. I was stunned. Not only had he broken his promise, but he had deceived me for half our time together.

Now, we've been going to counselling and it appears he is damaged by childhood influences and a lack of loving warmth.

Loving warmth is that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when people (or pets) are being affectionate toward you, and you know you are loved and that you belong somewhere. The "warmth" is partly metaphorical, but there's also an element of real warmth caused by the release of endorphins and other neurochemicals that dilate blood vessels in the skin.

Thank you for the help of you two.
