Hi ! I was watching the movie "Maleficent", using the subtitles for I'm not a native English speaker, when I saw : "Listen well, all of you. The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who meet her" and I must say that something disturbed me in this part of the sentence : "beloved by all who meet her" ! I now wonder why, with the pronoun "all", meet was used instead of meets. Was that a mistake ?

When we use "everyone/everybody", we treat it as singular. When we use "all", we use it as if it is "all of them/all of the people", so we treat it as plural.

Everyone likes pizza.
Everybody likes pizza.
We all like pizza.
They all like pizza.
All who eat pizza like it. (Unnatural sentences, just used for demonstration.)
Pizza is liked by all who eat it.

There is no need to write a post to say "Thank you". Simply click on the "Thank" button in the bottom left-hand corner of any post you find helpful. Also note that we do not put a space before a full stop, comma, question mark or exclamation mark.

Since I said in post #2 that we treat "all" as plural, which do you think is appropriate - "is" or "are"?

Alright, I understand ahah. I see, in French we do put a space before them. Do all the English people not put that space or it is only the American or the British one. Now that you've told me twice that it's treated as a plural, it has to be "All are" ^^

I may have figured something. It might be like in French:

All the cake is eaten.
All the cakes are eaten.

What's left? All is gone.
Where are the people? All are gone.

Have I actually figured something out ahah?

You have put a space before every question mark in your last post. Please click on "Edit Post" and remove those spaces before we continue. The punctuation rule is the same in every variant of English.

While you're editing your post, you will want to put a full stop at the end of those other sentences too. And capitalise the word "French".

'All' can sometimes take 'is' when it means 'everything'.
"All is forgiven."
"All is vanity."

In that example, it's unnatural. If you start a sentence with "all" to mean "everybody", it's usually followed by "who".

I would write your example sentence as "All who are lonely, hate it/hate the feeling".
