Is it a natural way to talk about pregnancy? "The process goes on for nine months and in that period women have to be on diet." Can it be referred to as a "process"? I think I should change "in that period" into "during that period".

Keep it simple: Pregnancy lasts nine months, during which women have to be on a diet. (They don't, at least not in the United States.)

Yes, you can. I was roughly quoting from a book about software called The Mythical Man-Month. Managers of failing software projects used to add programmers, thinking that two programmers would get the job done in half the time. It doesn't work that way in real life, just as adding a second woman won't cut the gestation time in half.

I have searched several sites (official medical and general advice) and have found nothing to suggest that medical opinion is that pregnant women of a healthy weight should try to lose weight. Here's an excerpt from one of them:

"Generally speaking, no mom-to-be should intentionally try to lose weight once she knows she’s pregnant, even if she’s overweight."

Pregnant women are on a diet not because they need to lose weight but rather because they have to control it. That's what I meant.

I think you mean they're given dietary recommendations. Being "on a diet" means following a dietary regime in order to lose weight. This was explained early in the thread.

They are advised to eat a healthy diet. They are not advised to go/be on a diet.
