Yes, but I would use "watched" instead of "saw", and you need at least a semicolon after "crime".

The OP's question is about the term 'what happened was' and he has been asked for the context in which he wants to use it.
Until he has shown enough interest to let us know, we need not speculate further.
Incidentally, Leonard, a better title would have been 'what happened was'.
