Is the term(what happened was) acceptable.

What happened last night was shocking.

Not a teacher.

Welcome to the forum, Leonard.:-D

Is the term "what happened was" acceptable?

Please note my corrections to your punctuation.

Matthew, your reply does not answer the question.

Yes, but only in the right context. Do you have one?
"People just stood by and saw the scandalous crime, what happened last night was shocking."
Is the context right?

"People just stood by and saw the scandalous crime, what happened last night was shocking."
Is the context right?

Yes, but I would use "watched" instead of "saw", and you need at least a semicolon after "crime".

"What happened last night is grossly illegal according to the existing law."
Is it correct to use "is" instead of "was"?

"What happened last night is grossly illegal according to the existing law."
Is it correct to use "is" instead of "was"?

Yes. The quality of being "illegal" is true in the present.

I am far from eligible to answer the question.

In that case, please leave the answering to those of us who are.

The OP's question is about the term 'what happened was' and he has been asked for the context in which he wants to use it.

Until he has shown enough interest to let us know, we need not speculate further.

Incidentally, Leonard, a better title would have been 'what happened was'.

Extract from the Posting Guidelines:

'Thread titles should include all or part of the word/phrase being discussed.'
