Hello!
Which sentences would you consider to be
correctly formulated passive constructions?

Thank you!

Note my corrections to your question (which should have appeared on one line, not two).

@gramcram In post #5, it looks like you were trying to respond to Rover_KE's post but you added half a sentence to the second quote box. Please try again!

Everything on this thread is mobile friendly except for the first post, which is unreasonable to me. 🤔

It's perfectly legible if you click the thumbnail. It opens a screen on which the main question is very clear. (That's on a laptop, mind you. I never use the forum on a mobile.)

Here's a screenshot for those of you who can't see it:

Here's a funny little test that I was taught to apply to sentences to see if they are/could be passive. See if you can add "by zombies" to the verb part. If you end up with a grammatically possible sentence, it's passive.

Sentence 4 would become "Hamlet is one of the most performed works by zombies [in history]". Ridiculous though it is, it's grammatically possible.

I don't think one should think of sentence 4 as being in the passive voice. It's better to think of 'performed' as an adjective since it's being modified by 'most'.

Semantically though, yes, there is a passive sense here in that 'Hamlet' is playing the semantic role of patient. A close paraphrase would be: 'Hamlet' has been performed more than almost any other work in literary history—clearly in the passive voice.

Here's a tip that will save you some time. When you want to thank someone for their response, you don't need to quote the post, write "Thank you", and add a new post to the thread. In the bottom right-hand corner of every post, you should be able to see the word "Like". If you hover over that word, some other options will appear. To thank someone, simply click the 🙏 icon. It means "Thank you".

I meant, of course, to say "unreadable"-- not "unreasonable".
