Hello there!

I can't quite decide which tense to use in the sentence below. I'm inclined to use the subjunctive, but my non-native teacher told me it's incorrect.

A geosynchronous satellite doesn't necessarily need to rotate around the equator, the only requirement is that its orbital period match/matches Earth's rotation period.

The subjunctive is correct, but most speakers of BrE would use the indicative.

Thank you, 5jj.
What does BrE stand for?

British English.

AmE means American English.

Isn't that a run-on sentence?

I think your right. I need to replace the comma with a semicolon, right?

Gotcha. Since I'm learning AmE, which would the mood used?

Although the subjunctive is still used in AmE, it's not necessary. In other words, both match and matches are correct and identical in meaning.
