I was taught this idea by quite a few people including natives. Can you substantiate your appeal to put it aside? If I put it aside how can I explain the difference:We can now see that you're trying to understand things in terms of what the listener knows about. Where did you get this idea from? I suggest you put it aside right away. It doesn't help explain anything. If I point at something, I don't necessarily need you as a listener to have prior awareness of the thing's existence.
