Can I use "transport" and "transportation" interchangeably?

"We need cars, undergound, and buses. A lot of people depend on transportation."

Oh, I thought according to this definition it's not wrong. Since I am talking about a method of travel.
"Transportation"
(North American English)
(British English transport)
[uncountable] a vehicle or method of travel
The city is providing free transportation to the stadium from downtown.
a mode/means of transportation.

It's from OAD.

Transportation is rarely, if ever, used in BE.

My original response was based on your question and example about using both/either "transport" or "transportation". "Transport" would not work. "Transportation" works in AmE.
