I think you should talk more often with the people who you want as friends.

Can I use “want...as” this way? Or should I say like this?

I think you should talk more often with the people who you want to be friends.

Can I use “want as” this that way no question mark here or should I say it like this?

a. Do you mean the use of “want someone as friends” is correct?
b. Could you explain to me why the relative pronoun “who” must be omitted?

b. Sorry, I meant to put it in square brackets to show that it was optional.
 
I think you should talk more often with the people who you want to be friends.
But those people may not want new friends who are very talkative.
