For us (Br Eng), that's what it does on the wall or down your front! It spits in the pan, splatters onto the wall. And the water fizzes.It splatters.

Am I correct then to think that it's OK to say, "the hot oil splattered into my eye" and it's incorrect to say, "the hot oil spat into my eye"?
