[Grammar] What Does "WHAT'S UP ANYWAY" Mean?

Hi... yesterday.. I said to a friend: "how are you"... and he said: "good, you" ... I said "I am good too" ... and he said: "what's up anyway" ...


what does "what's up anyway" mean. What should I say him?

Probably he meant "What has been going on in your life recently" but the "anyway" is not a common thing to say with "what's up."

(1) I am 75 years old, so I cannot guarantee the accuracy of this dialogue, but here goes:

Tom: How you are?

Joe: Good. [And] you?

Tom: I'm good, too.

Joe: "What's up anyway?" = So tell me, what's been happening to you lately?

Tom: I've just been hanging. = Just relaxing.

NOTES:

(a) If you want to be real (really) cool, you could pronounce "What's up" as 'Sup? ('Sup is a fast and super cool way of saying

"What is up?")

(b) And if you want to be super, super cool, you could refer to someone as "dog." The other day I was walking down the street when

I passed a young man who told me: "Be careful, dog. The sidewalk is dangerous." Since "dog" refers to young people, I was flattered

in being called a "dog"!

The "anyway" is a way of saying, "well enough about what you just said." Especially if you have the right tone of voice.

Actually, you are very wrong there. As a moderator here it's his role to make judgements like that, and he's very good at it.

Dude can sound very "west coast" (surfer?), but it can also sound very affectionate and playful. I've called my wife "dude" before, and it's totally non-offensive.
