What are the differences between "although" and "but"?

Examples:

Anna cooks very well, although
she lost the competition.

Or

Anna cooks very well, but she lost the competition.

I've been wondering how to use it properly. What are the differences between them. Can you explain it?

I prefer the second one, but the first part of that sentence doesn't go with the second part.

but

He studied really hard for the test, but he didn't get a good grade.
