[Grammar] become food to/for

Ok, I went to SpellChecker and I pasted this sentence:

"The preys soon become food to the plant and that is why we say that the pitcher plant eats insects."

And there was a mistake on the preposition "to", and the correct preposition is "for"
I'm wondering why we can't use "to" before the plant.

I changed the sentence to this:

The preys soon become food to her.

It was NO mistake on "to"

Can you help me?

Yes. Do not trust software on things like this. For instance, the plural of "prey" (the noun) is "prey."

I would use "for" in the first sentence and "to" in the second, but don't think the other way around is necessarily incorrect.

"Food for her" sounds better to me because she can regard the prey as food. The plant can not regard anything as food.

Just a small pedantic point. A spellchecker doesn't check grammar. For that you need a grammarchecker. In Word, and some other word processors, you can choose to run a grammar check at the same time as a spell check, but it's not the spellchecker that's looking at your grammar.

Well the 'SpellChecker' checks either spelling error or grammar mistake
