What is "getting up in the world"? Is it "make a success" or something?

EX)....It was in the spring of his thirty-fifth year that my father married my mother....I came into crying into the world. Something happened to the two people. The American passion for getting up in the world took possession of them. Being a schoolteacher, mother had no doubt read books and magazines. She has, I presume, read of how Garfield, Lincoln, and other Americans rose from poverty to fame and greatness and as I lay beside her, she may have dreamed that I would someday rule men and cities......

Hello Keannu;

Your guess is correct. To "get up in the world" is to advance socially or financially.

Either there are mistakes in your transcription, or the original text has a lot of errors.

"I came crying into the world" is a nice phrase. (Omit the first "into".)
