It sounds fun = It is fun [Fun = adjective]

I've come across sentences like 'it sounds like fun'. Though it sounds idiomatic to me, when you delve deeper into the meaning, why is 'like' there? is 'fun' here a noun rather than an adjective?

Thanks a lot

In the second version, "like" is a preposition, and its object is the noun "fun".
