[Vocabulary] meet each other and meet up

Dear teachers,

I wonder whether there is a difference between

a) After the bell rang, the teachers met up in the staff room to talk about...

b) After the bell rang, the teachers met each other in the staff room to ....

b) sounds a little odd to me but I cannot tell why...

I think both "a" and "b" are unnatural; particularly "b."
I would just say "... the teachers met in the staff room ... etc."

OK. But what's the difference then between "meet" and "meet up"?

There is no difference in meaning. "up" is redundant.
