Took it by wrong/a mistake

Today in class I said to my teacher " I took your book by wrong"

is that correct ? or should I say " I took your book by a mistake"

You are using spaces incorrectly. It may seem unimportant: if there is nothing written there, why should we worry about it? But spaces are important. We are used to seeing spaces in certain places and not seeing them in others. When they are placed incorrectly, it distracts us and makes reading more difficult.

The question mark never has a space before it. You should write

Is that correct?

and not

Is that correct ?

Quotation marks always stick to what is inside them. It is incorrect to write

" I took your book by wrong."

You should write

"I took your book by wrong."

(Of course, as 5jj said, the sentence is still incorrect. But even when you are quoting an incorrect sentence, you should use quotation marks and spaces correctly.)

Your punctuation is also incorrect. The problem with your punctuation is that there is too little of it. Remember that every sentence in English must have a punctuation mark at the end. It can be:

• the period,
• the question mark

or

• the exclamation mark.

Also, remember that every English sentence begins with a capital letter.
